Desert contract brings benefits for all customers at Broughton Controls
Securing an export order can be difficult at the best of times and with the pound at its present strength things are more difficult than ever, but when Broughton Controls of Oldham won a recent contract for the Middle East it threw up a whole new set of problems.
Although the 2 double, full-height turnstiles were a standard item it was the harshness of their intended location that presented the challenge. Broughton's engineers and design team had to make sure that the new turnstiles could withstand the extremely harsh desert conditions of a petrochemical plant in the Gulf.
High-grade stainless steel rotors were specified and the whole unit received a pre-coating phosphate treatment before being electrostatically, polyester powder coated. The units were then fitted with the customer's choice of access tag reader and illuminated green arrow / red cross direction mode indicators before a final safeguard against the climate, an IP65-rated housing for all the controls. Each unit was then put through a rigorous testing programme before being shipped out to site with the commissioning of the turnstiles and on-site training being carried out by Broughton engineers.
"Orders like this one force us to re-evaluate our products and adapt them as necessary to operate in different environments. As a result we often find ourselves incorporating modifications on a permanent basis. It may mean that some products are rather over-engineered for less severe applications but our policy has always been that if something will improve a product we will do it". Comments Laurence Goode, managing director of Broughton Controls adding;
This sort of product development and attention to detail, as well as our on-site training and installation commissioning service, are bringing us an increasing number of export orders. We are learning from each new application and the experience we gain from these jobs is being ploughed straight back into our product range so that all our customers can benefit".
The full-height turnstiles are part of a comprehensive range of pedestrian and vehicle access control products designed and manufactured by Broughton Controls as the UK 's leading access control specialists.
