Broughton Control’s rapidly expanding High Security Division has launched a new high security turnstile, the Defender 970, aimed at customers requiring unsupervised control of pedestrian access within a site perimeter.

Unique turnstile design allows easy escape
Ease of egress and access security have always been mutually exclusive concepts. Earlier this year however, access control solutions company Broughton Controls of Oldham, turned convention on its head with the design of a totally new system.
A need had been identified on several sites for a turnstile system that would allow the unimpeded exit of wheelchairs, plus accompanying pedestrian if necessary, without permitting unauthorised entrance. This function would normally be carried out by the use of an attended gate, a system which is not only costly in manpower terms requiring staffing at all times a venue is open, but also far from secure against unauthorised entry.
Broughton solved the problem by creating a unique, oversize turnstile. Mechanically operated in order to keep installation and running costs as low as possible, the turnstile does not require supervision and permits only a single direction traffic flow. Initial installations have been specifically for wheelchair egress and in these instances the whole mechanism of the turnstile has been re-geared to allow for a better-damped operation. This means that despite the diameter of the turnstile being far larger than normal the pressure required to turn the arms is actually less than that required on a standard unit. Fabricated in polymer, powder-coated, mild steel for maximum weather protection the turnstile comes complete with its own roof so is suitable for indoor and outdoor use and can be specified with electrical operation if required.
Laurence Goode, managing director of Broughton Controls says response to the new design has been excellent. "Although we designed the new turnstile to overcome a specific problem for one of our clients we have already had enquiries from a wide range of applications where traffic control and a facility for trolleys, wheelchairs or other equipment to pass through the same access point is required. Interest from the retail, wholesale and leisure sectors, where high traffic flow and security are of great importance, has been particularly strong".
