Big cats receive extra protection
Jaguars are rare creatures and in need of substantial protection, a task that Broughton Controls of Oldham were recently called upon to undertake. The Jaguars in this case were in fact of the four-wheeled variety on three sites throughout the West Midlands.
Although barriers and other entrance control equipment was already in use at the Browns Lane , Castle Bromwich and Coventry sites, Jaguar had decided additional protection was required. As the most effective and unobtrusive method of entrance control blockers were chosen and Broughton Controls was called upon to manufacture, install and commission units at six entrances over the three sites.
The 350mm lift blockers, in a variety of differing widths, were all manufactured to the latest Broughton design with the hinges and entire framework cast as an integral part of the foundations. In this way nothing can work loose, regardless of the loads and frequency put on the blocker. As an added bonus, installation becomes easier and costly downtime and maintenance at a later date, due to the framework working loose from the foundation over time and use, is avoided.
In addition to supplying and installing the blockers, the contract required existing barriers to be relocated and then all components of the entrance control system to be co-ordinated to operate from the gatehouse at each site.
Jaguar's site operations manager explains Broughton's involvement. "As we drew up the specification for this job we realised that we required the experience of an entrance control specialist. Broughton Controls understood the requirements immediately and from day one gave us the confidence that we were getting exactly what we wanted. The whole system is now fully integrated at each site even to the extent that the control cabinets for the new blockers have been supplied in a Jaguar green paint finish. The entire contract, from first meetings to the completion of commissioning has been carried out in only 2 months with the minimum of disruption to traffic at each site.
The Jaguar contract comes in the middle of a number of jobs involving the UK car industry, including Daimler Chrysler, Honda and the latest Jaguar plant in Halewood. These contracts have seen Broughton installing a range of blockers, barriers, turnstiles and gates to control vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
